Condition
The marble top with very minor chips to the edges and now drilled with holes at the edges along all sides, the frieze with veneer patches and areas of inpainting, plugs to the tops of the front and back right legs, some corner blocks replaced.

Catalogue Note
Marmaduke Furness, 2nd Baron Furness, was created Viscount Furness of Grantley, in the West Riding, Yorkshire, in 1918. Chairman of the Furness Shipping Company, he was also in the iron and steel business. In 1926 he married an American divorcee, Thelma Morgan, who later became the mistress of Edward, Prince of Wales. She introduced him to Wallis Simpson in 1931, who then became involved with the Prince in 1933 while Lady Furness was away in New York, the same year her husband divorced her. By the following year Mrs. Simpson had become the Prince's mistress.
With her twin sister, Gloria Vanderbilt, the mother of the designer Gloria Vanderbilt, Lady Furness wrote the book Double Exposure: A Twin Autobiography, 1958.
