Description

  • height 39 3/4 in.
  • 101 cm
each top rail carved with a shell flanked by foliate sprays on a punched sunburst ground above a shaped baluster foliate scroll-carved splat flanked by S-scroll stiles, the shaped apron with drop-in seat and supported on cabriole legs with shell-carved knees and claw-and-ball feet.

Condition

In very good restored condition, each with some old worm to the aprons and seat rails, some very minor chips to veneers, some veneers replaced, some rubbing and wear to the carving overall, some old marks, scratches and bruises to legs, both with the original drop in seat frames now stregnthened with ply-wood panels and with some old worm damage, some polished perishing to feet due to water damage. Chair 'VII' with old repaired breaks to top rail at joins, the left repaired break now with a stress crack, the seat rail with tearing to the veneer with some small losses particularly to the upper edge above the front left leg, chair 'VIII' with old repaired breaks to top rail at joins and with a plug to the back left leg at the apron.
