Description

each on ringturned mahogany tripod stands, the celestial globe with printed inscription CARY'S / NEW CELESTIAL GLOBE, / ON WHICH / are carefully laid down the whole of the / STARS AND NEBULAE / contained in the Catalogues of / Wollaston, Herschel, Bode, Piazzi, Zach &c. / calculated to the year 1820 / Made & Sold by J.&W. Cary No. 181 Strand London 1818., the terrestrial globe with printed inscription CARY'S / NEW / TERRESTRIAL GLOBE, / Drawn from the most recent / GEOGRAPHICAL WORKS, / shewing the whole of the New Discoveries / with the / TRACKS of the PRINCIPAL NAVIGATORS / and every imporvement in Geography / to the present Time. / LONDON / London Published by G&J Cary, S.t James's S.t Jon 4th 1827. Lacking compasses, stretchers later.

Condition

Restored condition, each lacking a compass and with later stretchers, perishing to the varnish with areas of brown spotting and saturation and several scuffs and abrasions to the globes, both with later brass caps held in by straight pins which replace the hour rings, the stands with some old marks and scratches and fading to feet; the terrestrial globe has a 2½-inch by 1½-inch oval patch around Egypt with a diagonal age crack running from Russia to the equator, restorations around the entire equator with some subsequent age cracks, small hole near south pole of globe, globe does not move freely within stand, the horizon ring with repaired inpainted diagonal break now with a plug and slight separation to papers of horizon ring at lines of construction underneath, two quadrant supports with repaired break at juncture with stem, one with a plug, later metal braces to underside of horizon ring at the meridian ring slots; the celestial globe with 4-inch circular patch with radiating age cracks varying from 2-inches to 7-inches in length, small hole to bottom of globe, inpainted areas, repaired diagonal break to horizon ring at slot for meridian ring, both slots now with metal braces to undersides, some veneer patches to exterior edge of horizon ring, several brackets replaced, age crack to underside of stem.
