the richly figured mahogany ormolu-mounted case enclosing a clock signed Stepn Rimbault / London, with a three-train movement striking the quarters on eight bells, the face with a date aperture and subsidiary dials indicating strike / silent and regulation of the frequency of the striking mechanism, the back-plate finely engraved with foliate scrolls and with a foliate engraved pendulum.
Provenance
J. J. Wolff, New York City
Condition
Case of good color and patination; with old age cracks and some lifting to some of the veneers and some minor losses particularly on veneered frame surrounding face hidden by door; silvered face with some discoloration; hand for the subsidiary strike/silent dial broken but present; both doors with later glass, the reverse with small crack; silk lining behind side panels modern; movement appears to be in working but obviously has not bee cleaned recently and would require full inspection by a qualified clock restorer; the case has a small hole to the left presumably for a pull-repeat mechanism which is possibly lacking; there is a modern winding key and an old key for the door lock.

Catalogue Note
Stephen Rimbault, a member of a family of clockmakers which flourished from the early 1700s until nearly the end of the 18th century, is recorded at 7 Great St. Andrews Street, London, 1760-1781. The present clock is remarkable for the fine quality of its ormolu mounts which are more sophisticated than those usually found on clocks of this period.
