By descent to the sitter's daughter Mary who married Thomas Ewer of Bushey Hall, Hertfordshire;
by descent to Jane, his daughter, who married Anthony Ashley Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftsbury on 29th August 1709;
Thence by descent to Anthony Ashley Cooper, 10th Earl of Shaftsbury, his sale, Christie's 24th July 1980, lot 3

Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition with no apparent marks or abrasions. ULTRAVIOLET Ultraviolet light reveals scattered re-touching throughout, most notably to the lower part of the canvas and a line of re-touching just above the sitter's head. FRAME Held in a gilt plaster frame.

Catalogue Note

The sitter was the third son of Henry Montagu, 1st Earl of Manchester. On 11th November 1635 he married Mary, daughter of Sir Robert Baynard of Lackham, Wiltshire, from whom he inherited the Lackham estates.
