Catalogue Note

'Their special kind of magic only begins to work when one has discovered the stillness that lies in the heart of everything he paints'.1
This statement typifies everything about Crooke's work. His serene pictures of languid bodies in repose, men and women going about their daily tasks and his simple still lifes evoke the spirit of the places he has lived in since 1951 when he moved from Melbourne to far north Queensland. The constant heat makes for a gentle, slower life, captured beautifully here in Island Interior.
