Catalogue Note
Wingman and Mountain has been described by the artist as relating to various ideas: leaping off cliffs (both real and metaphorical), taking risks, journeying and escaping. Guy Warren has used this imagery in many paintings and drawings since the early 1980s, most notably in the portrait of Bert Flugelman, Flugelman with Wingman, which won the Archibald Prize in 1985. The reference to 'Wingman' in this portrait was a comment on Flugelman's character as a risk-taker, but the flying image also related to the ancient Greek myth of Icarus.
The mountain in the present work relates to the escarpment at Jamberoo, on the south coast of New South Wales, which dominates the patch of rainforest where the artist lives and remains a constant source of imagery.
We would like to thank Guy Warren for his assistance in cataloguing this work.
