Catalogue Note
In the two decades since she came to prominence through winning the Moët & Chandon Fellowship, Susan Norrie has consolidated a reputation as one of Australia's foremost contemporary artists, working in both painting and video. She has been the subject of solo survey exhibitions at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (1994), the Art Gallery of Western Australia (1998) and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2003), and has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art, U. K. (1999) and the Busan Biennale, South Korea (2006). Most recently, she was one of the three artists selected to represent Australia at the 2007 Venice Biennale. The present work, with its lush colour and dark shadow and its oblique references to popular culture and paranoia, typifies 'the artist's investigation into the tension between beauty and terror, between surface appearances and what may lie beneath' 1
