of vase form, the spot-hammered surface applied with playful dancing frogs and engraved tall cattails, the large loop handles with lobed undersides, marked on base and numbered 5975-2006, 1203

Condition

slight wear to frogs, rim could use a little straightening in one spot, good condition, charming!

Catalogue Note

The very humanized frogs on this piece follow a Japanese tradition shown in the 12th century National Treasure Choju giga (Scroll of Frolicking Animals), in the Kyoto National Museum.  Similar frogs were used by Tiffany on the vases made for Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovitch, uncle to Nicholas II (see archival image reproduced by John Loring, Magnificent Tiffany Silver, p. 55).
