Description

Condition

Good condition with wear and discoloration to the gold commensurate with age. The cameo remains in good condition save for a chipped flowerhead on the maiden's coiffure, but this is apparent only upon very close examination. The neoclassical bust is carved in high relief from an agate composed of a subtly banded translucent bluish grey base leading to an opaque white top. The cameo is signed P. Lebas. The shaped surround is set with 28 cream-colored pearls (possibly split-pearls), each approx. 4.0 mm, bearing rose overtones and fair to good luster. Completed by four flowerheads centered by old mine-cut diamonds, approx. near colorless and of decorative quality, surrounded by pear-shaped purplish red rubies. The brooch mechanism may be removed by sliding out the pin from the crossbar; the remaining fitting allows the piece to be worn with a choker, and possibly other configurations, when paired with the appropriate accoutrements. The brooch measures 2 1/4 x 2 ins and weighs approximately 34 dwts.
