Condition

Sold in a wooden carved and gilded frame. Not seen out of frame. Mounted, and appears to be laid down on the mount. There is what appears to be a crease along the right edge, which has caused some slight disruption to the medium in places. Overall, there are some very minor scratches to the surface, and some very slight losses to the pigment in parts, but in all cases this is barely noticeable. Generally, the gouache is in very good condition.

Catalogue Note

Coolmore House in Carrigaline, County Cork has been the seat of the Newenham family since c.1680.  It was rebuilt in 1788 for W.W. Newenham who probably commissioned this painting.  In 1815, the British architect Thomas Cundy Senior (see lot 319) was engaged to add a series of gothic cottages to flank the entrance way to his estate.

Gabrielli studied in Rome before coming to Dublin, where he lived until 1819.  Before returning to Rome, he exhibited twice at the Royal Academy, London.
