Description

  • 80cm. high, 60cm. wide, 56cm.deep; 2ft. 7½in., 1ft. 11½in., 1ft. 10in.
the rectangular padded backs above upholstered seats now  with springing, on fluted and turned tapering supports, the underframes variously stamped I.R, T CRAY, and with paper labels `DRAWING ROOM' , rear supports slightly reduced

Provenance

Probably commissioned by Montagu Bertie, Earl of Abingdon (1784-1854), cup-bearer at the coronation of George IV at Wytham Abbey near Oxford; thence by descent.

Condition

This set of chairs is in country house condition. All have losses to gilded decoration and gesso and paint throughout with some later touching up of paint. The upholstery is non matching and all have stain, fading, losses to braid and all will need to be completely re-upholstered. The castors on all are later additions. Rear supports reduced as stated and some chairs retain a circular collar beneath square support, likewise possibly the front supports, although the design of the front supports could be said to be consistent with the present height. Minor differences as to height and carving on finials throughout. Some minor worm damage. One chair is lacking a rear castor.

Catalogue Note

Comparatively little is known about the chairmaker T. Cray, and his address is unrecorded. His stamp appears on a pair of painted beechwood chairs in the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and also on a set of twelve mahogany dining chairs sold by Phillips, London, 29 March 1983, lot 64.
