Description

the reddish-brown horn carved around the exterior with a pair of taotie masks in thread relief reserved on a leiwen ground, below two pairs of archaistic gui dragons and a leiwen band, the interior with a diaper border encircled by T-scrolls along the edge of the rim, with a further pair of gui dragons flanking the edges of the rim, and another pair forming the handle, all supported on three short feet, wood stand (2)

Collection of Kenyon V. Painter, Cleveland, Ohio & Arusha, Tanzania, circa 1910s-40s.
By descent to the present owners.

Condition

One end of the mouth across from the handle has a restored piece 1 1/2 inch deep x 2 1/4 inch across; two smaller triangular replacement pieces of bone ivory well carved to match the T-scroll motif flank the larger restored area. Two tiny holes near one of the ivory replacements are also filled in with ivory. The opposite end of the mouthrim with a restored piece 1/2 inch x 1/8 inch. The interior with four old chips or irregularly shaped insect nibbles, the largest 1/2 inch long. One of the gui dragons on the rim has a missing chip 1/8 inch long. There is one vertical age crack to the handle 7/8 inch long. One of the feet with a semi-circular chip 1/8 x 1/4 inch.
