Catalogue Note
Single-plank tops together with matching pedestals are uncommon. In particular, ones made of expensive hardwoods, such as huanghuali, were often sacrificed to repair other tables and the pedestals used as candle or lantern stands.
Compare a similarly linear huanghuali pedestal-top table, illustrated in R.H. Ellsworth, Chinese Furniture: The Hung Collection, vol. 1, New York, 1996, pls. 68-69, and vol. 2, pl. 33. A larger table of the same type was sold in these rooms, 1st June 1994, lot 581.
