Description

with two-board floating-panel top and low concave waist above a straight apron and four squared straight legs at the corners, all secured by simple squared humpbacked stretchers with two vertical struts on each of the longer and shorter sides dividing the negative space beneath the table into three pierced panels each, all the members finely thumb-molded into shallow concave grooves over all the exterior surface with deeper incised grooves at the corners, with ample traces of lacquer on the underside

Catalogue Note

Compare a similar waisted side table, although lacking the vertical struts on the stretchers and with hoof feet, in the collection of Robert Hatfield Ellsworth, illustrated by him in Chinese Furniture: Hardwood Examples of the Ming and Early Ch'ing Dynasties, New York, 1970, no. 66; and another sold in these rooms, 27th September 2006, lot 27.
