Description
of compressed globular form, well carved through the cinnabar red lacquer with a main circular panel depicting three five-clawed dragons reaching for a 'flaming pearl', their scaly bodies writhing amid turbulent crashing waves, encircled by four lobed panels each enclosing a phoenix in mid-flight amid a leafy spray bearing large peony blooms, the box similarly decorated, supported on a wide foot encircled by a keyfret, the interior and base lacquered black
Provenance
Spink & Son. Ltd.
Condition
There are expected age cracks throughout. There are small chips to the carving, but these are fairly superficial and do not detract from the carving. There is an old chip of approx 0.9 by 0.5cm to the rim of the box. The mouth and foot rims of the box and cover have been repainted to consolidate age cracks. Otherwise the piece is generally in good condition overall.
