Catalogue Note

This tray is striking in that while the compostion is very dense, it is balanced by deeply carved negative space that helps to make the tray seem less crowded.  Compare the mate to this tray in the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in Zhongguo Qiqi Quanji, vol. 5, 1998, no. 66.  See another similar square tray with figures in a landscape in the Beijing Palace collection illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, vol. 45, 2006, pl. 83.
