Description
of ovoid form flanked at the shoulders by a pair of animal mask handles suspending mock ring handles, painted with a continuous scene depicting various birds including two egrets, a kingfisher, a hen and a rooster in a lotus pond, with lush lotus blooms growing amid large lotus pads, arrowhead, slender stems and ears of millet, the rippling surface of the water defined with pencilled black lines, all between a band of ruyi heads enclosing foliate scrolls and lotus lappets at the foot, the dished mouth decorated with leafy lotus scrolls on a yellow-ground, the base inscribed in iron-red with the six-character mark
Condition
There is slight rubbing to the iron-red of the handles. Otherwise the piece is in good condition overall. The base has been fired to a slightly creamy tone. There is a luting line which runs across the centre of the jar, as visible in the catalogue and scattered ironspots.
