Catalogue Note
The sculptor and painter Jules-Oscar Maes was born in Lille in 1881. He studied under M. Coutan and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français where he received an honourable mention in 1910. He also exhibited at the Salons de la Nationale, d'Automne and Tuileries.
A carved wood bust of a young man by Maes can be found in the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. A bather, produced by Sèvres, is in the Musée National de Céramique.
