Catalogue Note

The present fragment was probably originally part of a cross shaft.  It was found near Leek in Staffordshire where the orange-pink gritstone is the local stone and can be found in buldings in the area. The abbey of Dieulacres was founded there in 1214 on the site of the earlier chapel of St. Mary the Virgin.
