Description
- an ivory diptych panel of the Crucifixion
flanked by the Virgin and St. John, trilobate arch surmounted by crocketted spandrel, two quatrefoils above, some minor traces of colour
Provenance
Belgian private collection
Condition
The ivory is carved in deep relief and the overall condition is good apart from normal wear. Traces of hinge pins visible on left. Later pierced for attachment in two places at the top and traces of red colour in the quatrefoils in the spandrels. On the back which is rich honey coloured, the top right and left edges have been shaved but this appears to be original to be able to take in the size of the tusk; also on the back there is a minor chip to bottom right edge and at mid point. Some vertical fissures in the ivory are more visible at the back
