Description
- A bronze oil lamp
- Padua, 16th century
cast in two sections with the head of a satyr surmounted on tripod claw foot
Provenance
Purchased by the great-uncle of the present owner directly from Wilhelm Bode in the late 19th Century
Condition
The lamp is attached to the base by means of a later screw which fits into to socket on the top of the tripod foot and is slightly loose. The quality of the base is far superior to that of the lamp and it is possible that they were associated at an early date. Wear to patina on the head and foot consistant with age.

Catalogue Note
Formerly described as from the Paduan workshop of Andrea Briosco, called Riccio by Bode and later by Wixom in the Cleveland Museum catalogue, the most recently accepted academic theory is an attribution to the workshop of Severo da Ravenna during the first quarter of the 16th century. Compare the foot with that on the boat shaped oil lamp as well as with the similar satyr's head both in Cleveland.
