Catalogue Note

This finely carved panel is characterized by the dense composition in deep relief and with attention to detail.  Christ is rising from the tomb within ribbon-like scrolls of cloud and the helmets of the guards as well as their amour are carved with precision, their hair and beards with fine curls. The right-hand guard wears a distinctive plumed turban indicative of the turbulent campaigns against the Ottoman Empire intent on the control of Eastern Europe.

For similarly crowded reliefs note the work of Gerhard Gröninger (1582-1652) active in Munster.  Compare in particular the reliefs on the high altar in Munster Cathedral dating to 1619.
