Description

  • an oak figure of St. Michael
in armour with tasseted skirt, wings later replacement 

Condition

The wings are later and the face appears to have been repolished as has the breast plate . As is evident from the catalogue photograph the devil is missing below. Traces of gesso in the cracks and both arms have been reattached. As is evident from the catalogue photograph most of the devil is missing.

Catalogue Note

Compare the breastplate with the distinctive arch motif with that worn by the oak figure of the knight St. Gereon in the Rijksmuseum, iv.no.BK-NM-23. Illustrated by Scholten and de Werd in the recent exhibition catalogue at the Museum Kurhaus Kleve The St. Gereon is attributed to a Lower Rhine or Cologne workshop of the early 16th century.
