Condition

This a rare survivor but it has suffered. There are losses to both hands and tip of his left foot. There are multiple layers of paint and gilding (to which there are cracks, chips and losses). Remnants of glue attaching the figure to later wood base and reverse of throne used to stabilize the figure. Five holes on base likely used to secure the figure.

Catalogue Note

This seated figure very much follows the full frontal romanesque type but with the folds of the softened drapery indicating a transitional period. Compare the throne with that used in the Sedes Sapientiae group in the Schnutgen Museum dating to the mid to late 13th century.
