Provenance

Blankenburg 1911, inv. no 210;
Sale, Hanover, Sotheby's, 15 October 2005, lot 5055.

Condition

The actual painting is softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is relined (glue). Stretcher marks are visible to the front. The painted surface is under a fine layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. There is a coarse craquelure pattern, which varies in places, and shows a tendency towards cupping, due to the dryness. Two repaired damages can be seen to the centre left, another small repaired damage can be seen under the eye, as well as larger repaired damages centre left, centre right and upper right. Small discoloured retouchings can be seen throughout. This is all confirmed under ultra violet light. Offered in a giltwood frame, chips (ML).
