Description
- 19cm, 7 1/2in diameter
circular, gadrooned rim, armorial engraved with a coat-of-arms, detachable foot, the reverse with applied cut-card work and inscribed This Salver was dredged up from the bed of the River Lee near Black Rock Castle Cork June 1831. The arms are those of Sir Thomas Dilkes & Lady Mary (O'Bryen) his wife about AD 1700, scratchweight 14-12
Catalogue Note
Admiral Sir Thomas Dilkes (circa 1667-1707), Rear Admiral of the White and later MP for Castlemartyr, married Lady Mary Boyle after 1693. As the daughter of Murrough O’Brien, 1st Earl of Inchiquin, Lady Mary was a direct descendant of Brian Boru, the ancient High King of Ireland.
