Condition

Very good overall condition. Some minor old polish residue in the crevices. Some natural wear to the patina notably to the handle as expected from normal use. Underside edge of base has a quarter inch area of roughness which appears to be in the casting.

Catalogue Note

This chamberstick is noted for its distillation of the Art Nouveau vocabulary to the essence of pure line and whiplash curve.  The embellishment is kept to a minimum and is in effect leaning toward proto-modernist funtionalism.  Criticized at the Munich Glaspalast exhibition of 1899 for its restraint, the form is now appreciated as a hallmark and turning point for things to come in the 20th century.
