Catalogue Note

Wang Tiande's Gu Shan digital photograph series are inspired by the natural beauty of the mountains situated near the West Lake of Hangzhou, where Wang completed his doctoral studies at the China Academy of Art. Through this new medium Wang combines traditional elements from the rich heritage of Chinese landscape painting with modern technology.

From a distance the images simulate a traditional landscape composition, however close insepction reveals the mountains to be digital manipulations of a landscape crafted from ash salvaged from burnt Chinese xuan paper, tying in this series with his Digital series (which consist of two layers of xuan paper, the top with a landscape rendered with burn marks from a lighted cigarette, revealing glimpses of a more traditional ink on paper landscape beneath).
