"I had no idea how to express the feeling [old photographs] imparted to me within a painting until I saw the work of Gerhard Richter in Germany in 1992. Before I went to Germany my favourite artist was Anselm Kiefer, yet ... it was Richter's work that I found thought-provoking, in particular its flat, smooth qualities."
