Catalogue Note
“I am not at all an abstract painter and I’m not a fashionable painter. Abstract painting is a fashion, a style. I always use forms that are based on existing forms. You must not look at the details but at the thing as a whole. To me it is the totality that matters. I consider myself as a figurative painter and I paint in an expressionistic way. Standing in front of my canvas, I don’t try to make a painting. What comes out is a cry or a child or lovers or a tiger behind bars.” Karel Appel
