Catalogue Note

Sturtevant's interest is in art about art, not a superficial level, i.e. her manner of working with existing artworks, but at a further, higher level: the level of the idea of art, of what could lurk beneath the surface, the underlying structure, that which she once called the silent power of art. Lena Maculan (Sturtevant: Catalogue Raisonné, Gemälde Skulptur Film und Video, Frankfurt, 2004, p. 40)
