Catalogue Note
This painting is based on Alfred Tennyson's poem, Enoch Arden, about a sailor shipwrecked and lost at sea for ten years. Enoch returns to find that his wife, believing him to be dead, is now happily married to his childhood friend, Philip. Enoch decides not to reveal that he is still alive, sacrificing his happiness for theirs and dying of a broken heart. The poem ends with the tragic words: "So past the strong heroic soul away. / And when they buried him the little port / Has seldom seen a costlier funeral."
