Condition

Original canvas. Very minor craquelure to the figure which is visible upon close inspection. There is blooming to the lower half which is masking the signature. There is an artist's pinhole to the lower right corner and light surface dirt. Ultraviolet light reveals no retouching. Held under glass in a gold-painted wooden frame.

Catalogue Note

James Doyle Penrose was born in Michelstown, Co. Dublin before moving to London where he spent most of his working life before finally settling at Oxhey Grange near Watford in Hertfordshire. He studied at South Kensington and St. John's Wood art colleges before being accepted into the Royal Academy Schools. He exhibited a total of 19 pictures at the Royal Academy and painted primarily portraits and historical subjects. The late, eminent artist, critic and collector Sir Roland Penrose is his son.
