Catalogue Note

The subject is thought to be Anne Page of Shakespeare's comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor, published c.1602.  It was Shakespeare's only play to exclusively illustrate contemporary English life, and describes a comedy of errors in which the spirited Anne's hand is sought in marriage by an array of unsuitable admirers, concluding with her elopement and triumphant return.
