Condition

The canvas has been lined. There are signs of craquelure to the paint surface in places and some minor stretcher marks. There is some very minor surface dirt. Otherwise in good condition and ready to hang. Held in a decorative gold painted frame in fair condition.

Catalogue Note

The sitter is the eldest child of John, 1st Earl Spencer and his wife, Georgiana Poyntz. The Countess encouraged the friendship with the Devonshire's which led to Georgiana's marriage at the age of 17 to the 5th Duke of Devonshire. The original painting by Thomas Gainsborough hangs in Chatsworth.
