Condition

From Simon Parkes Art Conservation: The work has been lined with glue but is not in very recommendable condition. There is a good deal of restoration to the surface, although only a small amount is visible under ultraviolet light in the upper right sky, and it seems more than likely that there are restorations beneath the older varnish throughout the sky, particularly on the right. The boats are in serviceable state, although the larger sail of the nearer boat seems to have a fair amount of restoration, and the water, particularly in the foreground, also seems to have old restoration. It is impossible at the moment, without chemical testing, to ascertain whether the signature is all original, partly strengthened, or completely reinforced.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report.
