Condition

There are small areas of the timber missing on the striking areas of the club which would appear to be ancient damage caused by use. There are small areas of timber missing at the base fo the shaft, the patina being worn away at this point. There is a hairline crack approximately 5 cm long near the centre of the shaft. The club is in supberb condition with a deep glossy patina overall.

Cf. Clunie, Fergus, Fijian Weapons and Warfare, Fiji Museum, Fiji, 2003, p.53. The Gata or snake war club was the most widely used war club in Fiji. According to Clunie the angled cutting edge formed by the converging cheeks was designed to cut through and snap bone. The spur perhaps represents the gaping jaws of the striking Gata or Pacific Boa snake
