Description

  • 10.3cm., 4in.
the thick-walled flared form engraved on one side in tiefschnitt with a portrait of the Elector Johann Georg III of Saxony in profile to sinister wearing armour, a sword over his shoulder, within a ribbon-tied wreath inscribed CURFÜRST ZU SACHSEN JOHAN GEORG DER III, the reverse with a view of  a besieged city within an extended oval line panel surmounted by a cherub's head with outstretched wings and flanked by cornucopiæ, the lower section cut with thumbnail flutes

Catalogue Note

Elector Johann Georg of Saxony was one of the heroes of the Siege of Vienna against the Turks in 1683, and died of the plague in 1691.
