Description

  • 23.2cm., 9 1/8 in.
the waisted bell bowl with faceted base and air beads, engraved with a continuous scene of cavalrymen and infantrymen being led by commanders towards buildings on a hilltop, below a gilt rim, over a faceted baluster stem and domed foot with folded rim

Catalogue Note

For a glass of similar form engraved with the same scene, see A.von Rohr, Lauensteiner Glas 1701-1827, pp.80-81, fig.49.3. See also that from the Helfried Krug Collection, sold in these Rooms, 7th July 1981, lot 104, of different form but similarly engraved.

It is believed that the scene may be that of the Battle of Minden which took place in Germany on 1st August 1759, during the Seven Years War (1756-1763).
