Description

  • 10.7cm., 4¼in.
the waisted cylindrical form painted with a gilt titled view of buildings and a square, inscribed below Der Pulverthurm mit dem neuen Mauthaus in Prag, all within a narrow amber-stained rectangular panel with gilt foliate decoration, the reverse with gilt C-scrolls and palmettes below the gilt-edged rim, above a cogwheel foot with part amber-stained star-cut base

Condition

there is some typical rubbing to gilding; there are three repaired chips to the rim (0.4cm x 0.3cm and 0.3cm x 0.2cm); there is a diagonal scratch to the enamel in the lower right corner (0.5cm), and two light lateral scratches to the enamel of the central part (0.7cm and 0.4cm), otherwise in good condition

Catalogue Note

The gilt C-scroll decoration is considered by some to be a late feature on Kothgasser's transparent-enamelled beakers. The present lot may be the work of a painter and gilder from the workshop of Anton Kothgasser.
