Catalogue Note

The view on this lot is in fact that of Das alte Museum by Karl Friedrich Schinkel after an etching by Friedrich Thiele, after 1828. The draft design for the new museum building by Schinkel originates from 1822. By 1828 steel-engravings of the museum designs were widely available. Although the painting on the glass may have been undertaken by a number of hands, the attribution to Carl von Scheidt seems stylistically to be very strong, especially as we know he was based in Berlin at this time.
