Catalogue Note

The chair here offered for sale is a typical example of the decorative style of the versatile painter, illustrator and artisan Theodoor van Hoytema (1863 - 1917), showing the influence of Japanese graphic art. Van Hoytema, one of the first Dutch animaliers, often used birds as a decorative element in his designs for furniture, executed by the company Van Wijngaarden & Co in Weesp. These carvings resemble his earlier designs for embroidered panels in draught screens and room dividers, of which an early example is in an American private collection
