Catalogue Note

Commissioned by The Avon Rubber Company Ltd. in 1961, the present work was used as an illustration for their popular annual calendar.  The company commissioned various contemporary British artists to produce works for inclusion in the calendars and it is likely that this picture was included in the 1961 edition.  The company was founded in 1885 after a derelict cloth mill, known as Avon Mill, on the banks of the River Avon at Limpley Stoke, was converted into a rubber factory.  It still exists today as Avon Rubber PLC.
