The canvas is unlined. There are three abrasions along the left edge of the painting in the upper left quadrant, and further light scuffs to the right and bottom edge of the work. There is a tiny scratch visible on the central figure's right leg. There is a small spot of paint loss in the lower right quadrant. Under ultraviolet light, areas of the black paint which Herman has used to accent his figures fluoresce. This may be due to the artist's return to the work some years after it was begun. There are two areas of retouching, however which fluoresce under ultraviolet light. The first is to a repaired tear, approximately 8cm. long in the upper left quadrant. The second is to a repaired puncture in the lower left quadrant. Held in a rectilinear black frame.
