  • study for "conversation" and seated nude
  • the first signed, titled, dated 5.7.42 and inscribed To C.H.L.E; also signed and inscribed To my dear friend Charles Emmanuel and dated Christmas 1942 on the mount; the second signed and inscribed To F.L.E 
  • coloured chalk
  • the first 20 by 25.5cm.; 8 by 10in.; the second 18.5 by 28.5cm.; 7ΒΌ by 11in.

Condition

The first is on laid paper. The paper has discoloured slightly as is visible when the mount is removed, though the colours remain in their original condition. The bottom edge of the paper is slightly torn where it has been removed from the sketch book. There are slight handling marks towards the edges of the mount. The second has some light spots of discolouration over the surface and a slightly transparent patch on the top right side probably caused by water damage. There are some handling marks around the edges of the work and the top edge is torn where it has been removed from the sketch book. The third drawing executed in brown chalk depicting a lady has some light spots of discolouration and there is a small crease on the bottom left corner. The bottom edge of the work is torn where it has been removed from a sketch book. The fourth drawing executed in red chalk depicting a lady has a very small spot of discolouration towards the bottom right edge and along the bottom left edge of the work. The fifth drawing executed in pencil depicting a bell ringer has some slight handling marks towards the centre and a discoloured mark towards the top of the piece. The sixth drawing executed in pencil depicting a lady in a head scarf has some small spots of discolouration to the right and left side of her. There are light handling marks around the edges of the work. The seventh drawing executed in pencil depicting a lady wearing a robe has marks in each corner caused by glue holding the work to the mount.
