Condition

Executed in watercolour, gouache and ink, on card. There is discolouration visible to the edge of the paper, especially down the right hand side. There are some spots of staining, including a spot of foxing to the upper edge, and water staining in an area to the lower edge. There are further water marks in the green areas which are consistent with the artist's hand. There are scuff marks to the surface including minor scratches. Held in a wooden frame, behind glass and unexamined out of the frame.

Catalogue Note

The present work was the last in a series of willow paintings begun by Craxton when he stayed near Cambridge in 1943. The anthropomorphic appearance of the willows fascinated Craxton who used some of the works as illustrations for his anthology, The Poet's Eye.
