The canvas is unlined. There are two small punctures to the canvas in the lower left quadrant.
There is an area of paint loss surrounding the punctures and a 3cm. cosmetic scratch which leads into the punctures. There is also a small spot of paint loss in the upper right quadrant. The surface of the work is quite dirty and would benefit from a clean.
Under ultra-violet light scattered spots fluoresce a bright white colour in the lower left and lower right quadrants but these do not appear to be retouching.

Catalogue Note
The present painting depicts Leonard and Virginia Woolf's garden at Monk's House in Rodmell, Sussex. After the death of Virginia Woolf in 1941, Leonard continued to spend part of his week at Monk's House, where he formed a close relationship with Mrs Trekkie Parsons. Mrs Parsons inherited Monk's House and its contents from Leonard and gave it to the National Trust.
She did, however, retain the present painting, a particular favourite of hers, until sold to the present owner in 1994.
