Condition

Catalogue colour comparison: The colours are brighter and fresher than the illustration suggests, notably the green tones and the background is slightly lighter than the illustration suggests. Structure: Original canvas. There is some minor surface dirt and some very minor scuff marks to the edges of the corners otherwise in good original condition with some good passages of impasto amongst the green tones. There appear to be no signs of retouching under ultraviolet light. Held in a plaster gilt and painted frame.

Catalogue Note

Painted in 1957.

Tony Randall was very much a part of our lives. His performance in "The Odd Couple" in the early 70's won him an Emmy and four additional Emmy nominations. For those five years, he was in our living room every week. He went on to be nominated for six Golden Globes and appeared in numerous films, television series and late-night talk shows. He had a lovely sense of humor and loved the opera. In 1991, he founded the National Actors Theatre which is now housed at Pace University in New York City. My late father, David Niven adored him and they appeared together in the 1957 film "Oh, Men! Oh,Women!" and later co-hosted the 31st Annual Academy Awards show together in 1959. So on a very personal note, I am so pleased that Sotheby's has been asked to offer some of his paintings and drawings at auction. He was a memorable man who brought joy to many.
