Provenance

Given to the artist Adrian Ryan by Sven Berlin in 1949 and thence by descent to the present owner

Literature

Sven Berlin, Alfred Wallis, Primitive, 1948, no.24, illustrated.

Condition

The board is sound and has uneven edges, visible in the catalogue illustration with parts which are slightly upturned. There is an old scuff mark to the centre of the boat, visible in the catalogue illustration and the surface is slightly dirty otherwise in good original condition. Under ultraviolet light, there appear to be no signs of retouching. Held in a painted wood frame under glass; unexamined out of frame. The colours are slightly cooler and more subtle than the illustration suggests.
